Minera Yanacoca SRL start their operations in 1992 in Cajamarca City partnership with Buenaventura, is the largest gold mine in South America.

About this role

 

The Health and Safety Manager – Yanacocha reports to the Managing Director. The role is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of Health and Safety strategies for the Yanacocha facility, including the oversight of the operations, closure, and project activities at the facility. This position will focus on delivering on supporting, developing, and leading the H&S activities and team members.  
The role will ensure all H&S activities are aligned and implement the standard deliverables and expectations.  

The H&S Manager ensures the implementation of several key strategic initiatives including, but not limited to:

  • Fatality Risk Management Program, 
  • Fatigue Management Program, 
  • Live Work Elimination

Constraints, Framework & Boundaries
There is a significant degree of autonomy in this position working with the Yanacocha Senior Leadership Team, as well as with the Closure and WTP leadership teams.  The role will also interact and work with the Newmont H&S Global and Regional functional personnel and external stakeholders.
The incumbent will be required to manage their activity and costs under the approved budget and will provide ongoing variance reporting of this budget on a monthly and ad hoc basis. 
The incumbent will need to work under Newmont values.

Challenges

  • The major challenges of the job are:
  • The WTP and Closure works within the brownfield site will require a high level of engagement with operations and project teams. 
  • Leading and developing the health and safety capability of line leaders and health and safety professionals. 
  • Implementation and alignment of Newmont Health and Safety standards and systems.
  • Contractor Management includes evaluation, engagement, monitoring, and management across a wide variety of contractor maturity levels. 
  • Engaging with leaders, challenging the status quo, and supporting health and safety improvements.
  • Varying levels of maturity of sites and leaders across the facility. 
  • Different languages and cultures.
  • Implementation and improvement of Newmont reporting systems and data analytics.
  • Support the implementation, embedding, and sustaining approaches for fatality risk management (FRM) and live work elimination (LWE).
In this role you will


Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

 

  • Provide demonstrated leadership, support, and coaching to the leadership team and contractors to ensure the Newmont vision and values are understood and embedded.
  • Partner and engage with Yanacocha Operations and Project Contractors to implement and embed the specific H&S strategy to ensure a consistent approach.
  • Develop strong working relationships to coordinate and implement H&S programs and requirements with Yanacocha Operations, Closure, and Projects. 
  • Support the implementation of Corporate and Global Project H&S initiatives. 
  • Provide training, interpretation, improvements, and feedback to the H&S Leadership Team, and Peru Senior Leadership Team.
  • A key change agent who challenges the status quo and ensures continuous improvement.
  • Provide interpretation and guidance on application of Newmont standards, guidance and local legislation regarding health and safety requirements. 
  • Support the Contractor H&S management process through all site activities.
  • Provide advice and feedback on incident investigations, actions, and lessons learned.
  • Support, participate, lead, and challenge the business partners/contractors in H&S Risk Management Workshops.
  • Work with key stakeholders to identify emerging H&S risks and/or risk mitigations.
  • Identifying opportunities for sharing leading practices.
  • Undertake assurance activities for H&S aspects. 
  • Lead reporting for the site and use the data, to identify emerging issues, gaps, and continuous improvement. 
  • Maintain reporting systems and oversight of Newmont improvement practices
  • Undertaking governance and assurance activities against internal and external standards
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders on health and safety matters.

The above responsibilities are the main responsibilities of the position. The position also develops other activities that are not included in this document and the immediate supervisor is responsible for informing such activities.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, or related area.
  • Minimum of 10+ years experience in Health and Safety. 
  • Minimum of 5 years´s experience in a senior Health and Safety leadership role.
  • Minimum of 5 years´s experience in Project Delivery / Construction within a mining or heavy industrial environment. 
  • Experience in Emergency Response including system design.
  • Compliance with Peruvian Law about the requirements for this role.
  • The incumbent is expected to have extensive experience in the application of Risk Management systems and processes in an operating environment.

Working Conditions and Location

The person must be in good health and in good physical condition to work in the field in different climatic conditions and at altitudes of 4,000 meters above sea level.

Must be able to live in Cajamarca, this is a national position (no expat)

She/he must be able to travel around all MYSRL operations to attend to clients.

The work schedule is 5 days on and 2 days off.

The incumbent may be required to travel and assist other sites nationally and internationally.
