Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

**Main purpose of job**:
The Political Intern will support the Political Section at the British Embassy in the delivery of UK foreign policy priorities on democratic governance and human rights. Youwill support the Political Section in their analysis and reporting of relevant aspects of Peruvian politics and the human rights context, as well as in monitoring changes in legislation on democracy and human rights.

Your role will include supporting the implementation of the embassy’s Human Rights and Gender Equality Strategy by providing support to specific projects and liasing with key stakeholders both in Peru and the UK working on democratic governance and human rights priorities in Peru.

**Roles and responsibilities**:
You will have the opportunity to learn about work across the embassy’s political and human rights portfolio.

With the support of your line manager and the wider team, you will be expected to carry out tasks including:

- Research on prioritised areas of work, including Peruvian politics, democracy, gender, equalities, business and human rights, and others
- Outreach with key stakeholders in the public sector, international community, civil society organisations and private sector
- Monitoring and reporting on the political and human rights situation
- Organising and delivering events on democracy and human rights issues
- Developing project proposals
- Project monitoring
- Working with the Embassy’s communication team to promote the UK’s priorities on democracy and human rights in Peru
- Supporting the Chevening Officer.
- Other logístical and administrative tasks as required to support the delivery of the Political Sections’ work and objectives

The internship is being offered on a hybrid working basis, combining remote and office work. You will be expected to come to the office at least 3 days per week. The Embassy also provides study leave.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

The position is open to students from all fields, but may particularly suit a student of Social Sciences (Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology) in the last year of their Bachelor’s degree, or a recent graduate.

Knowledge of the Peruvian political system and understanding of human rights issues in Peru are important, as well as sensitivity about diversity, gender and inclusion issues.

Level of English language required: Confident. You will be expected to contribute to meetings, facilitate meetings and to produce written communication in a good standard of English

Interns will receive training according to their role, including online courses and training from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and International Forests Unit.

Additional information

30 hours per week, Monday - Friday.

The embassy generally has core working hours from 10am to 4pm.

You will agree your exact working pattern with your manager if you are successful.
