Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities) 1

**Main purpose of job**:
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the Trade and Investment Promotion and Negotiation organisation for the UK. We promote British trade and investment across the world, we support UK businesses overseas and attract foreign investment to our shores. We have 3,000 staff across the globe in over 100 countries.

DBT divides the world into 9 regions, each led by His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner. The Latin American and the Caribbean Region (LATAC) is led from São Paulo by Jonathan Knott, with his Deputy located in Mexico City. The Network is represented in 19 Posts with a team of over 170.

DBT Peru is looking for a Life Sciences Business Development Manager, to be based in Lima, Peru. Working with British Embassy Peru, DBT regional and UK colleagues, as well as the Peruvian private and public sectors, the successful applicant will contribute to UK economic growth and jobs across one or more sectors. This will be done, principally, by supporting UK exports and investment into Peru.

**Roles and responsibilities**:
Healthcare & Life Sciences covers the pharmaceutical, medical devices and biotechnology sectors. These sectors demand work on market access issues such as resolving problems related to sanitary permit approvals, importation licences and lobbying for improvement to sanitary and phytosanitary regulation.
- Supporting UK companies export to the Peruvian market through executing well-planned interventions (meetings, introductions, events, marketing, partnerships, government engagement etc.), resulting in the delivery of a highly ambitious export value target across the sector(s) for which the officer is responsible.
- Project managing a diverse “pipeline” of trade-related projects, in conjunction with UK and regional sector team colleagues, in line with DBT high value campaign guidance to support future UK exports, moving quickly from identification of major opportunities to commercial wins.
- Developing a robust understanding of market access barriers affecting the sector, a prioritised assessment of these and plan of action to address these via appropriate levers.
- Working in close partnership with other Embassy teams, as required, including helping to secure secondary benefits (commercial wins) from UK government programmes, ensure that UK companies’ concerns about the Peruvian business environment are suitably addressed and enhance the reputation of British industry in Peru.
- Briefing Embassy, DBT, FCDO and Peruvian Government mid and high-level officials, as well as high-level businesses on UK Government objectives, focused on their economic and commercial impact.
- Managing assigned DBT Colombia resources, including forecasting and reviewing the budget allocated to the officer’s sector(s) at least quarterly to ensure that all delegated funds are between 99 and 100% spent by the end of the financial year.
- Supporting the wider work of the DBT Peru team and other Embassy sections (when required), including regional engagement, internal coordination and planning, events, analysis and briefing.
- Identifying and taking-up opportunities to improve existing skills and/or develop new ones.
- Being an active member of the wider Regional Healthcare & Life Sciences Team.
- Fulfilling the requirements of performance appraisal process, including establishing and executing a personal development plan.
- Performing other reasonable tasks as requested by the Director and Deputy Director of DBT Peru.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience 1
- Two or more years of relevant professional experience and/or an undergraduate degree in a business-related field.
- Evidence of professional experience in the Life Sciences/Healthcare sector.
- Evidence of working effectively with the public sector, especially the British or Peruvian public sectors.
- Evidence of excellent knowledge of the UK and/or Peruvian public sectors.
- Experience of both the UK and Peruvian business environments and cultures.
- Experience of working with teams across multiple countries and cultures in LATAC.
- Proven ability to lead and deliver on projects.
- Good judgement, ability to take initiative and prioritise effectively.
- Excellent/fluent communication skills in English and Spanish and ability to manage senior stakeholders.
- Ability to conduct market research and utilise information to build business relationships.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience 1
- Experience of project or programme management, line management and budget management.
- Proficient user of MS Office.
