- 23:59 (Europe/Vienna) Country Austria Type of Contract Temporary Job Status Full-time Hours Per Week 40 Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme? Horizon Europe
- MSCA Marie Curie Grant Agreement Number 101312406 Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? No Offer Description The PhD student will participate in an international team in an EU-funded Doctoral Network project called QUEST. The project consists of 15 Ph.
D. students with sub-projects at leading European Universities, research facilities, and innovative companies. All 15 Ph.
D. projects fall within the overall theme of deep nanoscale physics, spanning material fabrication, measurements, and theory & simulations at the deep nanoscale. This Ph.
D. project will take place at JKU Linz, in the Semiconductor Physics Division. Apart from the time at JKU, there will be secondments of about two months each at the Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) in Germany and at DTU in Denmark. Additionally, there will also be regular meetings with the other 14 Ph.
D. students in the doctoral network, including training schools and workshops. As a participant in the project, the PhD student will become part of the research group of Prof. Moritz Brehm at JKU working on novel group-IV materials for nanoelectronics, Si photonics and quantum photonics, including their epitaxial formation and characterization. While prior experience with MBE and characterization (e.g., AFM, XRD, PL) is a major advantage, we place high value on curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn. Extensive training on all specialized equipment will be provided. Requirements Research Field Physics » Solid state physics Education Level Master Degree or equivalent Skills/Qualifications Due to the mobility rules of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie program, the applicant must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Austria for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date.
- Recognized university master’s degree in physics, materials science, or electrical engineering
- Basic knowledge of semiconductor and solid-state physics, quantum physics including low-dimensional systems, and semiconductor technology.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills; Strong scientific writing and presentation skills
- Advantageous technical
skills:
Hands-on experience and theoretical understanding of thin-film deposition techniques
- Practical experience with materials characterization techniques like XRD, AFM and/or PL
- Familiarity with cleanroom environments, vacuum systems, and laboratory safety protocols is an asset
- Self-motivated, reliable; self-reliant, tenacious, prudent and responsible working style
- Strong team player, enjoying a multicultural, multidisciplinary research group and sharing knowledge with colleagues
- Fast learner with a passion for acquiring new experimental skills
