Marine & Coastal Science Analyst

Oceana is seeking a full-time Marine and Coastal Science Analyst based in our Lima office. The position will support Oceana by providing scientific support for our policy advocacy work in Peru. Responsibilities include addressing various issues related to fisheries, conservation, illegal fishing, seafood trade, and habitat protection.

This position will collaborate closely with the Fisheries Director and Communications teams to develop a portfolio of quantitative and qualitative information products related to fisheries, stakeholders, and associated activities. They will also support the VP and other Directors as needed based on specific requirements.

We achieve measurable change by conducting specific, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and articulated goals. Our campaigns extend to countries that, combined, govern nearly one-third of the world’s wild-caught fish, including Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, the United States, the UK, and the countries in the European Union.

**Principal Duties and Responsibilities**

**Essential Functions**:

- Collect, systematize, and produce reports on fisheries, seafood value chains, oceanographic indicators, and bibliographic databases.
- Keep Oceana Peru’s fisheries resources database updated with the regulations issued by Peruvian government authorities.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical documents on fisheries management and sustainable resource use.
- Assist in creating articles and documents to disseminate fisheries issues for public communication.
- Participate in the operation of an information dissemination system on fisheries and ocean issues for diverse audiences.
- Provide transversal support in preparing press releases and other communication products.
- Perform other tasks assigned by his/her supervisor.

**Job Requirements**

**Education and work experience**:

- Graduated in Biology, Fisheries Engineering, or a related field.
- Expertise and experience in Peruvian ocean issues, marine science, and fisheries, coupled with a willingness and desire to advocate for policy change.
- Proficient in marine ecology, fisheries science and management, data analysis, and information visualization.
- Interested in researching fishery resource management, local and international seafood trade, and information dissemination systems.

**Skills and knowledge**:

- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including an advanced understanding of Microsoft Excel required.
- Advanced knowledge of spreadsheets; familiarity with spatial information processing (QGis, Grass, etc.), and programming in R is desirable but not essential.
- Proactive, organized, highly responsible, and able to work in a team, supporting various campaigns/projects simultaneously with speed, accuracy and courtesy.
- Ability to approach their work with a positive mindset, sense of ownership and innovation.
