The community engagement and digital activism specialist will be in charge of  strengthening and maintaining a network of Oceana's allies, including volunteers, activist, environmental groups, educational institutions, among others. He or she will be responsible for corresponding with existing enthusiasts, recruiting new supporters, engaging youth and developing digital activists who identify with and support initiatives to ensure a healthy ocean and sustainable fisheries in Peru. 

The role aims to strengthen public knowledge and spark citizen engagement on issues related to marine conservation, expand the organization's advocacy capacity, and build strategic alliances with universities, youth organizations, and civil society actors. This is a one year contract with the possibility of extention.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support to Oceana's Deputy Vice President and Communications Director, to achieve campaign goals that require building support from different stakeholders and civil society groups.
  • Build and maintain Oceana's alliances and relations with environmental activists and groups, university groups, community leaders, among other stakeholders, including but not limited to regular and effective communication, coordination of activities and public statements.  
  • Organize and host presentations to potential activist and collectives about Oceana's overall mission and campaigns in Peru to enable informed public support for Oceana's work.
  • Participate and assist in the development and implementation of citizen engagement plans to accomplish campaign goals. 
  • Identify needs and design and implement training programs to strengthen the communication and advocacy capacities of artisanal fishing stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities and develop strategic alliances with educational instituions to strengthen the knowledge of relevant actors and the public on marine conservation and sustainable fishing.
  • Manage a database of Oceana's allies and supporters network. 
  • Design and implement a capacity-building and mentoring program for individuals interested in supporting Oceana's outreach efforts. This includes establishing evaluation and scoring systems to identify top-performing participants, coordinating training sessions with internal and external specialists, selecting and implementing internships for high-performing participants, and defining program guidelines, participation criteria, timelines, and deliverables aligned with organizational campaign goals.
  • Collection and systematization of data from social media platforms and media impact monitoring, for the preparation of internal organizational reports.
  • Monitor, analyze and follow-up of accounts that disseminate misinformation related to marine conservation, fisheries and/or about Oceana's campaigns.
  • Implement and manage strategic alliance with allies to secure the delivery of merchandise and rewards to maintain interest of our network of supporters.
  • Other responsibilities as appropriate and necessary to achieve campaign objectives, 

Job Requirements

Education and work experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline required such as communications science, digital marketing, marine biology, or an equivalent of education and experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in social media management.
  • Experience managing training and/or volunteer programs or citizen collectives is desirable.
  • Environmental or fisheries-related experience is desirable.

  • Strong interpersonal skills - specifically the ability to navigate collaborative work environments with diverse partners. 
  • Proactive, organized, with a high degree of responsibility and ability to work as a team and support various campaigns/projects in parallel.
  • Ability to approach their work with a positive mindset, sense of ownership, enthusiasm, and innovation. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriate with a wide range of people both verbally and in writing. 
  • Desire and ability to advocate for complex, aggressive conservation positions in both small and large settings. 
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills in Spanish and English proficiency at intermediate level. 
  • High degree of discretion when handling sensitive information.
