INTERN

Must have 1 term of practicum completed with Southern Oregon Head Start

Starting Wage: $18 per hour

Hours: 22 hours per week

PURPOSE:

The Parent, Family, and Community Engagement (PFCE) Intern supports the mission of Southern Oregon Head Start by actively contributing to family engagement, health promotion, and community partnership efforts. This learning opportunity is designed to provide students with meaningful, hands-on experience in a supportive early childhood education environment. The PFCE Intern works under the guidance of our PFCE Department and may support direct family engagement activities based on interest, ability, and academic program requirements.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

I. GENERAL SUPPORT DUTIES

A. Assist in the preparation, setup, and clean-up for meetings and family/center events.

B. Maintain and update bulletin boards, parent rooms, pamphlet racks, and other resources areas.

C. Assist with center safety and sanitation routines

II. FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

A. Promote and publicize center and community events to parents and families.

B. Research and compile local and national resources aligned with families' expressed needs and interests.

C. Support program recruitment efforts in the community

D. Assist with health screenings conducted at the center

III. DIRECT ENGAGEMENT WITH FAMILIES

A. Co-facilitate or provide training for parent groups in areas related to the student's interests.

B. Follow up and support well-child exams, dental exams, and health concerns.

C. Follow up and support on family goals and related progress.

D. Distribute family resources and facilitate referrals to appropriate services.

E. Document relevant family interactions and support in the online child file.

F. Participate in home visits under supervision and support.

G. Provide Center support as needed.

IV. INTERACTION WITH CHILDREN, PARENTS AND CO-WORKERS

A. Must relate in a positive, nurturing way, both verbally and physically, and be sensitive to the needs of children when appropriate.

B. Must relate in a positive, supportive way, both verbally and physically, and be sensitive to the needs of parents and co-workers.

C. Must use quick, safe reactions and responses in dealing with children or situations that involve children.

REQUIRED JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education : High school diploma or equivalent required; Currently enrolled in a degree or certification program in Human Services, Early Childhood Education, Social Work, or related field required.

Experience : Minimum of 1 term practicum completed with Southern Oregon Head Start.

Essential Skills : Keyboarding and computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office Suite, training development, and database programs.

Essential Mental Abilities : This position is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret information; analyze and solve problems; be self-directed; observe and interpret people and situations; learn and apply new information or skills.

Essential Physical Requirements : Ability to occasionally lift/carry up to 40 lbs. a distance of 10 feet and to push/pull up to 40 lbs. a distance of 10 yards. Ability to sit for extended periods of time. Sufficient mobility and range of motion to perform intermittent standing, walking, balancing, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, reaching, squatting or kneeling, twisting and ascend/descend stairs/steps. Ability to intermittently perform physical requirements of bus monitor duties. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Sufficient vision and hearing to perform job duties. Sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to perform job duties.

Exposure to Hazards : Repetitive motion tasks, sitting for long periods of time, use of personal computer and other office equipment. Unpredictable child and parent behavior, exposure to contagious conditions, hazardous chemicals and driving and riding in motor vehicles.

EMPLOYMENT CONTINGENT UPON:

Pre-employment health screening as required by Agency and position (may include, but is not limited to: drug screening, occupational health screening and/or functional testing)

Central Background Registry enrollment

Valid Oregon Driver License

Proof of current personal automobile insurance in accordance with agency policy
