Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

**Main purpose of job**:
The Political Section at the British Embassy in Lima liaises with senior political stakeholders in the Peruvian government to advance the bilateral relationship and collaboration in key policy areas. It further engages with a range of stakeholders in the public and private sectors, civil society and media to produce political analysis aimed at informing wider decision-making, particularly on Peruvian domestic politics, UK foreign policy priorities, human rights and multilateral policy. The political team coordinates the elaboration and implementation of the Embassy Human Rights strategy. The section also runs the Chevening Scholarship Programme for Peru.

The Political and Human Rights Officer will lead on the delivery of the embassy’s existing human rights and gender equality strategy, policy analysis of relevant gender equality and human rights issues. They will also manage related project funds if and when applicable. To do so, the jobholder will be expected to hold and maintain a diverse network of stakeholders in the public and private sectors, as well as civil society. The jobholder will also support the team in delivering Chevening campaigns, including driving a communications plan to advertise the scholarship, recruit and select talent, and liaise with the Chevening Secretariat in the UK.

**Roles and responsibilities**:
Gender/human rights (80%)
The jobholder will lead on the implementation of the Women & Girls and Human Rights strategies. This includes managing an existing portfolio of several specific gender equality, human rights and democracy project interventions. The jobholder will be expected to develop and maintain a solid network of stakeholders in support of responsibilities covered in this area, particularly in civil society, international cooperation and government.

Chevening (15%)
The jobholder will drive the embassy’s support to higher education by promoting the Chevening scholarship programme, including driving a communications plan to advertise the scholarship, recruit and select talent, and liaise with the Chevening Secretariat in the UK.

Team/corporate (5%)
The jobholder reports to the Head of Political and will have the chance to support the wider political team with the delivery of relevant Country Business Plan objectives. They will also have the opportunity to participate in Embassy committees, contributing to wider corporate objectives.

**Resources managed**:

- Management of Project Funds may be required, depending on central funding availability.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- A willingness to learn more about the UK’s work in support of gender equality and human rights.
- A University Degree, preferably related to international relations, gender or human rights, but other academic disciplines will be considered as long as an active interest in human rights and gender equality can be demonstrated.
- Professional experience relevant to this position, which included policy reporting and/or project management.
- A resilient, flexible and ‘can do’ attitude.
- Fluency in English and Spanish, both verbal and written.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Experience from gender or human rights-related advocacy or similar, with related existing networks.
- Experience working in an English-speaking environment.
- Project and programme management experience.
