**Role purpose**
The Museum has an exciting opportunity for a professional to join the Collection Engagement Business Unit within the Rights & Permissions team as a Rights and Permissions Project Officer.
The Rights & Permissions team provides guidance across the Museum in relation to copyright and intellectual property as it relates to Museum collections and associated work and activities. As part of the Museum’s obligations under the Museum’s First Nations Cultural Rights and Engagement policy the team also consults with Indigenous artists, their agent, or relevant community/art centre, as appropriate.
The Museum is collaborating with the Maningrida community to co-develop an immersive digital experience Water Spirits (working title) that will tour internationally. Senior Custodians and Maningrida Arts Culture Centre will curate the experience, guiding exhibition themes to ensure cultural integrity. A broad cross-organisational NMA project team, including exhibitions, digital producers, curators, rights management, collections and community engagement staff, will be working flexibly and collaboratively to ensure delivery of the experience within a timely manner.
This project position will work with limited direction within the Rights & Permissions team and with the broader project team to ensure copyright and Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property is managed in a culturally appropriate manner.
This includes advising on rights issues, assisting in review of contracts and agreements, ensuring appropriate copyright clearances are place, any necessary individual consents are obtained and working collaboratively with the NMA project team to document cultural consents as required. A high level of written and administrative skills are required to ensure that documentation and record keeping is created and maintained in line with relevant legislation and NMA policies.
**Key accountabilities**
- Engage and collaborate with First Nations cultures with an appreciation of community engagement work.
- Utilising a range of information systems and tools, develop and review critical IP documentation and process rights clearances using the Museum’s established processes to ensure appropriate consent and compliance with legislation.
- Work productively and cooperatively in a team environment with strong communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive, cooperative and productive working relationships.
**Selection criteria**
- A good knowledge and understanding of copyright legislation, principles, practices, and Intellectual Property rights management, preferably within a cultural institution, including Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property.
- Well-developed written, administrative and record keeping skills including proven capacity to use a range of information systems and tools such as record keeping, collection management and digital asset management systems.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with influence and produce high quality written work.
- Work productively and cooperatively in a team environment whilst delivering essential outputs within a major project.
- An understanding of First Nations cultures and an appreciation of working on a project with a high level of community engagement.
